SHY PORTER, PHD, LMFT

I am a licensed couple and family therapist and relationship scientist with a passion for understanding the innerworkings of the mind at the individual, dyadic, and familial levels. In my years of clinical practice, I have had the pleasure and the privilege to sit down with countless couples, individuals, and families to help them navigate their inter- and intrapersonal difficulties on a journey toward growth and resolution. I strongly believe that no matter what the motivation for coming to therapy may be, clients should emerge from the process with a greater understanding of themselves that ultimately translates into a deeply enriched and fulfilled life.

I have extensive experience working with high school and college-aged individuals; women (alone or with their partners) in the preconception and/or perinatal period; couples in any phase of their relationship; adult individuals struggling to cope with the challenges of everyday life; and families comprised of adolescent or adult children and their caregiver(s) or other significant family members. In my work with clients, we address anxiety, depression, self-image, emotional dysregulation, romantic relationship challenges, issues related to life transitions, interpersonal dynamics, and whatever else may arise along the way. I have worked with clients who represent diverse backgrounds and experiences on a wide array of issues and celebrate the intersectionality that makes each of us beautifully unique.

I completed my clinical training in one of the highest-ranking MFT programs in the country at The University of Maryland’s School of Public Health. My PhD training and research was centered around relationship science and reproductive health. The skills and expertise developed over the course of both degree programs and years of clinical experience have culminated in a highly specialized skillset that I bring to my work with patients.
